A female prison guard has been knocked unconscious by an inmate armed with a guitar at a youth justice centre. 

Paramedics were called to Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct about 8pm on Wednesday night to treat the woman following a violet outburst.

Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said the incident was absolutely inappropriate and such behaviour will not be tolerated, the Herald Sun reported.

‘This is a situation that I find absolutely appalling under no circumstances does this government accept this behaviour is appropriate in any way, in any facility in their state,’ Ms Tierney said. 

The government department overlooking the youth facility confirmed there was an ‘incident’ and said only that a staff member was being treated. 

‘There was an incident at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct on Wednesday that was resolved quickly by Youth Justice staff,’ Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman Kim Armstrong said. 

She said police will now investigate the matter while the staff member recieves medical treatment.  

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that one person had been taken to hospital. 

The incident is the second time that an inmate has used a musical instrument as a weapon in the past month, according to 3AW.
