Gullit says Guardiola and Man City will need time to recover after Tottenham Champions League defeat

‘This is a huge blow… they will feel the pain again at the weekend’: Ruud Gullit says Pep Guardiola and Manchester City will need time to recover after Tottenham Champions League defeat

  • Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night
  • Tottenham progressed to the semi-finals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate
  • City won 4-3 on the night but it wasn’t enough for Pep Guardiola’s outfit
  • City take on Tottenham at home in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon

Ruud Gullit believes Manchester City’s defeat by Tottenham in the Champions League will come as a ‘huge blow’ ahead of their reunion on the weekend.

City’s dreams of winning the quadruple were dashed on Wednesday night as they were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, after drawing 4-4 on aggregate but going out on away goals.

Pep Guardiola thought his side had won the game in injury-time through Raheem Sterling but VAR ruled out the goal after Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

And Gullit insists City will ‘feel the pain’ when the two teams meet again in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon at the Etihad as they look to keep up their title charge.

‘I feel for him because I see his passion, I see what motivates him and this is a huge blow for this team. They are going to play them again and they will feel the pain,’ Gullit told beIN SPORTS.

‘Of course they want revenge but you can’t, it’s not the same. Tottenham want to stay also for top four so both have everything to fight for.’

City will look to finish the season on the high and there will be no better way of bouncing back than beating Liverpool to the title this season and clinching the FA Cup.

Guardiola’s men sit two points behind Liverpool in the race for the title but City have a match in hand.

City have a huge week coming back, playing Tottenham on the weekend before facing neighbours Manchester United next Wednesday.

They then take on Burnley, Leicester and Brighton in their remaining league games before an FA Cup final encounter against Watford at Wembley on May 18.
