The horrifying moment a gunman stormed a teenage basketball game in Mexico and opened fire has been caught on camera.

Players and spectators fled when a man fired multiple shots at a parent who was watching the game in the city Aguascalientes on Friday.

The incident unfolded during an under 15s match between Oaxaca and Baja California in a gym, according to local media reports.

Footage of the ordeal, which was filmed by broadcasters, shows players sprinting from the court when multiple loud bangs rang out. 

A commentator had initially claimed the bangs were the result of fireworks.

Loud screams could be heard as panicked players and spectators tried to flee the gym as shots were fired. 

The gunman was targeting a father who was watching his son play, according to news outlet SPNoticias.

The father had stepped outside the gym to answer a phone call when he was shot at. 

Local media say he tried to shield himself by running back into the stadium but the gunman followed him inside.  

The father was reportedly shot in the back but no one else was injured.   

No arrests have been made so far.
