Gym grandmother reveals some of the strangest request she has had from men

A champion bodybuilder dubbed the ‘Iron Sister’ by her online followers has revealed some of the strangest requests she has received from her male fans.

Angela Graham, 68, of Leeds, is a former glamour model and Armed Forces pin-up and discovered the world of bodybuilding in the 1970s.

She now regularly posts about her workouts on Facebook, where she boasts more than 5,000 followers.

While she is an inspiration for many, she reveals has also fielded a fair few ‘unusual’ requests – including one from a man offering her $25,000 to wrestle him.

‘The strangest request I had was from a young man aged 25 who offered me $25,000 to go to his country to wrestle him,’ Angela told the Australian Today show.

It was an offer she said she politely declined.

‘Quite a lot of the guys on there [Facebook] want to wrestle me,’ she continued.

‘They want to arm wrestle me, or ask if I can lift or carry them which I find quite bizarre but it’s their thing.’

Angela, a grandmother-of-two, revealed she was introduced to the sport by a boyfriend in the 1970s, as women’s bodybuilding was beginning to take off.

She said before that she had never been in a gym as ‘people just didn’t go to gyms in those days’.

Angela explained that her boyfriend at the time was subscribing to a magazine called Muscle and Fitness and after seeing a feature on Lisa Lyon, an upcoming American bodybuilder, she said she was sold.

‘I looked at the picture and said “I want to look like her”. He said “You’re dreaming, you haven’t got the commitment or the motivation or the discipline” – and that was all the motivation I needed.’

Soon a fully-fledged gym bunny, Angela spent hours honing her body until two years later, she was ready to compete.

Within two years she had a competition physique and over the years she has been training she has held seven titles, including a British champion.

And while these days the mental health nurse is less focused on taking out top awards, she couldn’t be more dedicated to the sport.

She revealed she goes to the gym every day ‘for about an hour and a half’ and as a result sports 35cm (14in) biceps and a 68cm (27in) waist and can lift 65kg (10 stone) – her own body weight.

The fitness fanatic, who had a hip replacement last year because of arthritis and has had carpel tunnel surgery in both hands, refuses to let age slow her down.

In fact she revealed on the program that she continued to train using hand splints because she was so motivated to keep up her physical appearance.

The 68-year-old, who is mother to Lana, 48, and Melissa, 32, believes there are numerous benefits to working out, and that it’s never to late to begin.

‘It’s never too late, it increases bone density, muscle density and you look good,’ she said.
