If you’ve ever found yourself gazing at another woman’s lustrous locks longingly, you’re not alone.

But if you thought you had to be born with full-bodied hair to enjoy everything that comes with it, you’re mistaken – you can fake it, thanks to hair extensions.

As she opens her new salon in Sydney, hair stylist and ‘extension queen’ to the stars, Emily Hadrill, caught up with FEMAIL to reveal everything you need to know before getting hair extensions, from the price to the frequency of appointments and whether they would suit you.

WILL THEY SUIT ME?

According to Emily, the first thing you need to know about hair extensions is that they will suit almost everybody.

‘Almost all hair types suit extensions, as there are so many different ways hair extensions can be used.

Whether you want to add length, volume, a different colour or a particular style, they can suit all sorts,’ she said.

Of course, the hair stylist said the most common hair type seeking hair extensions are those who struggle with fine hair.

‘We have also done some fantastic transformations on women in their 60s and 70s, which are often done by adding a few pieces of a shorter haircut to create fullness and a more youthful look,’ she said.

‘Typically adding length or thickness can instantly take years off, while creating a longer style can make the face look longer, slimmer and more youthful.

‘Hair extensions don’t just need to be used for adding a dramatic amount of length. They can be used in a small quantity to create an illusion of thickness.’

WHAT CAN YOU GET AND HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

Of course, when it comes to hair extensions, there are myriad options available, depending what you’re in the market for.

‘We offer multiple types in order to suit all hair types, lifestyles and desired results. These are wefts that are hand beaded in, individual strand extensions that are also hand beaded in, traditional tape extensions and our signature (extremely popular) invisible tape extensions,’ Emily explained.

A half head (which is suitable for someone with longer, finer hair wanting to add thickness) can cost $325.

Meanwhile, a double full head can cost up to $910, depending on your hair.

However, the bad news is that the expense doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve had hair extensions, maintaining them is a costly endeavour – with prices ranging between $160 and $270.

Emily said it’s important to be aware that you will need to get maintenance done on your hair extensions every couple of months.

HOW CAN YOU MAINTAIN YOUR HAIR EXTENSION HEALTH?

Of course, it’s easy to get beautiful hair if you get hair extensions.

But how about looking after them once you get home?

‘The most important part of looking after the extensions once they are applied is using extension friendly products like shampoo, conditioner etc,’ Emily said.

‘If the correct products are used, extensions can be relatively simple. Brushing and washing is virtually the same as your own hair, and styling may take a little longer due to more hair, but the results are incredible.’

Speaking about the one simple trick for looking after them, Emily recommends you sleep in a low ponytail to avoid tangles.

‘It’s the easiest way to keep your hair looking luscious,’ she concluded.
