Hamas prisoner in Israel stabs guard with screwdriver

A prisoner in Israel has brutally attacked a prison guard with a screwdriver, causing minor injuries and an increase in sentencing for the inmate, said to be a member of Hamas.

CCTV footage from inside Nafha, a prison near the town of Mitzpe Ramon in southern Israel, shows an unnamed inmate attacking the guard, who also was not named.

The video shows the guard turning his back from the prisoner, standing only a few feet away, to open a door.

While the guard is doing this, the prisoner appears to slip a screwdriver from out of his sock, running over to the guard and violently thrusting the screwdriver down on his captor’s chest.

The guard reacts quickly, managing to protect his body and begin to deescalate the situation.

The inmate is seen running off but is said to have been restrained shortly afterwards, with the guard reported to have sustained only minor injuries.

Palestine media have said that the prisoner, whose original offence was not reported, had been given an additional two years for his attack on the guard. He was said to be at the start of a two-year sentence. ahead of the incursion.

It is believed that the prisoner was from Hamas – a fundamentalist Sunni-Islamic organisation that is in charge of the Gaza Strip with an aim to liberate Palestine.

The organisation’s militant wing has made it is regarded as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the European Union and the United States.

Palestinians have widely accused Israel for the mishandling of its prisons and medical neglect taken upon imprisoned Palestinians, including those from Hamas.
