Musical theater fans have hailed Hamilton ‘the best thing they’ve ever seen’ after the hit musical was released on streaming service Disney+ today. 

Since it opened on Broadway in August 2015, Hamilton been the hottest ticket in every town it has played in, including London, and catapulted creator Lin Manuel Miranda into the global spotlight. 

Now for the first time fans can enjoy the musical in their own homes, without having to fork out for an often exorbitant theater ticket. 

The cinematic version of the original Broadway stage production, which was filmed across three nights in 2016, was released on Disney+ in the early hours of the morning in the US, and 8am in the UK.

It is free for Disney+ subscribers and many admitted they have signed up to the streaming service just for the show. Disney+ costs £5.99 per month in the UK (£59/year) and $7 per month ($70/year) in the US. 

The widespread excitement surrounding the release, which coincides with Independence Day in the US, led fans to dub today #HamiltonDay on social media.  

Viewers wasted no time in watching the musical and revealed how they ‘set alarms’ and ‘cancelled plans’ to ensure they were among the first to enjoy it. 

Dozens have taken to Twitter to share photos of their Hamilton viewing parties, with many getting creative with themed menus, costumes and replica tickets. 

Despite the sky high expectation, the show hasn’t failed to disappoint, with even fans who’ve watched the stage version several times declaring it ‘amazing’ and ‘breathtaking’.

Others heaped praise on standout members of the cast, including Phillipa Soo, who plays the wife of Miranda’s Hamilton, and Daveed Diggs, who plays the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. 

Actor Jonathan Groff, who plays King George III, has also proved a hit with viewers at home.

The show tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers and a key figure in the drafting of the U.S. Constitution.
