Hampstead bedsit with bedroom in the kitchen up for £1,100-a-month

A ‘studio flat’ which boasts a bedroom in the kitchen has gone on the market for a staggering £1,100-a-month.

Locals in Hampstead, north London, where tiny studio flats sell for more than £350,000 and five-bed homes sell for close to £4million, were outraged at the price of the bedsit when it was advertised online this week.

Five photos of the bedsit show a cramped flat, which only has room for a single bed tucked at the back of a narrow kitchen.

The snaps show a clothes rail above the microwave, with shelves above the bed stacked with a toaster, kettle, iron and water filter jug.

The other photos show the flat’s only other room – the bathroom, which only has a shower, loo and a tiny sink.

Despite the minuscule size of the bedsit, it is described as a ‘modern small self-contained studio flat in the heart of Hampstead village’ – which requires a £500 deposit.

The advert states that the flat has no parking, no garage, no garden, no balcony, no disabled access, and that pets and smoking was not allowed, and that only ‘professionals’ would be considered as tenants.

The bedsit is also on the main road, the A502 Rosslyn Hill, meaning traffic noise could be a major issue.

The blurb for the bedsit reads: ‘Suitable for single occupancy. Modern small self-contained studio flat in the heart of Hampstead village.

‘Very pleasant and high quality finish. Fully fitted kitchen with washing machine/dryer and microwave oven included. Plus shower room. All bills included including wi-fi.

‘References required plus holding deposit. Fabulous highly prestigious location. Three minutes to Hampstead Underground Station – references will be required.’

Nicholas Pollard, 31, who is looking to move into he area after landing a job as a graphic designer, said he was horrified when he spotted the bedsit as he searched for somewhere to live.

He said: ‘I saw the bedsit and thought it would cost maybe £500 at a push, but it is on for £1,100-a-month.

‘That’s more than £13,000-a-year to live in a tiny box with a bed in the kitchen. It must be the most expensive bedsit in Britain.’

He said he was now looking to live in south London and commute to work in Hampstead, adding: ‘I can get a two bed flat with a garden for £1,100 in south London, so I think for quality of life purposes I’ll look there instead.’

Robert Taylor, of the Camden Federation of Private Tenants, told the Camden New Journal newspaper this week that you can reach the fridge while lying in bed.

He said: ‘The advert is a typical example of letting agent speak where it describes the property as having a fully fitted kitchen, rather than the kitchen is the living space.

‘Sadly, we suspect that people have been falling over themselves to live in this tiny space where you can reach the fridge while still lying in bed because it’s located ‘in the heart of Hampstead village’.’

Local Tory councillor Oliver Cooper said it was an ‘absurd’ price to pay.

The owner of the bedsit refused to comment when contacted, but said the flat was ‘not available’ at the moment.

Bosses at Spareroom.co.uk, which was set up in 2004 by Rupert Hunt and boast that someone finds flat with them every three minutes, did not respond to a request for comment.
