Hapless lorry driver smashes through wall in Derbyshire

  • Driver was trapped in lorry following crash but was later freed by firefighters
  • Toyota was forced to evacuate the area but no members of staff were injured

A hapless lorry driver smashed through the wall of a Toyota factory after missing the entrance by yards.

The Transfreight HGV was left embedded in the side of the warehouse in Burnaston, Derbyshire, after the driver lost control at 9.30am yesterday.

He was trapped in the lorry following the crash but was freed by firefighters before being taken to hospital.

A Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: ‘We received a call at 9.39am this morning and crews from Burton-on-Trent came to assist after a lorry crashed into the side of the Toyota factory.’

A Toyota spokeswoman confirmed the incident had happened and said employees were forced to evacuate the area.

She said: ‘We can confirm that an incident occurred at Toyota’s Burnaston factory earlier today whereby a lorry collided with a building.

‘No Toyota employees were injured. The area was evacuated whilst it was made safe.’

A worker, who did not want to be named, said: ‘God knows what the driver was doing.

‘It looks like he misjudged the entrance somehow and just went through the wall.

‘Luckily no one was on the other side of the factory wall at the time or they’d have been a goner.’
