Harry Potter fans are eagerly-awaiting the franchise’s 20th Anniversary reunion, which will see the megastars of the movies meet up for a one-off special.
And on Monday, excitement was set to reach fever pitch as a first look trailer for the upcoming HBO Max special was unveiled – with teasers of many of the stars.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are among those set to reunite for the Return To Hogwarts special on New Year’s Day, alongside other lead stars from the movie franchise, who were featured in the teasing trailer showing a select few receiving invites.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling will not be joining the special amid much controversy surrounding her over the past few years after she tweeted about biological sex leading to backlash from the trans community.

The clip opens with an image of the vast clock at the front of Hogwarts before shooting to an image of the wizarding newspaper The Daily Prophet, with a front cover headline reading: ‘Hogwarts welcomes back alumni’.
Somebody who appears to be Emma dressed as wild-haired Hermione Granger moves the paper down to reveal the top of her head although it cannot be certain if the mystery star is definitely the brainbox.
The teaser then shoots to a suited Robbie Coltrane, who plays lovable giant Hagrid in the films, sitting in a London coffee shop, where he receives a letter – recognisable in paper and font as penmanship from Hogwarts.
An address on the front reads: ‘Robbie Coltrane, The Coffee Shop, Chelsea’.

Next to receive an invitation is Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom, as he holds his letter, looking at the Hogwarts coat of armour and looking confused.
Mark Williams, who depicts Mr Weasley, is then seen on what looks to be the Hogwarts Express while a hat clad female – seemingly Emma – is seen strutting down a bustling Platform 9 3/4, drawing the teaser to a close.
News of the reunion came last month, as it was revealed the stars would come together to discuss the magic world and the eight film franchise.
Daniel, who plays the titular role, Rupert, who plays Ron Weasley, and Emma have not made a public appearance together since the premiere of the last premiere of the franchise, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, in July 2011.

Casey Patterson whose production company is producing the special gushed over the cast as she said: ‘There’s magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts, where they began 20 years ago.
‘The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey, through the making of these incredible films.’
Of the upcoming special, President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics Tom Ascheim said: ‘It has been an incredible journey since the debut of the ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ film…
‘Witnessing how it has evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical to say the least. This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon…

‘From the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later.’
The special will later air on channels TBS and Cartoon Network in spring 2022 before the theatrical release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
The original release did not mention the person responsible for the creation of the characters, author JK Rowling, who has been criticized for her views on transgender people. Sources close to the project told TMZ that it will focus on the creation of the first film 20 years ago, and the central cast and crew.

They said Rowling will be shown in archival footage from the creation of the first movie, but will not make a new appearance in the special.
Rowling has been criticized over the past few years for her views on transgender people. In June 2020, she took to Twitter to criticize an opinion piece that used the term ‘people who menstruate’ instead of women.
‘I’m sure there used to be a word for these people,’ she tweeted at the time. ‘Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?’ She then continued with a thread discussing biological sex.
Parting is such sweet sorrow: The English actors have not made a public appearance together since the premiere of the last premiere of the franchise, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, in New York City back in July 2011
‘If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction,’ she claimed. ‘If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.’
Rowling later clarified that she respects ‘every trans person’s rights to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them,’ and went on to say she would march ‘if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans.
‘At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female,’ Rowling said, the Associated Press reported at the time. ‘I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.’
Famed author JK Rowling will not be joining the production, however
