The distress was written across the surrounding players’ faces and, though Elliott later insisted the injury ‘wasn’t his fault whatsoever,’ Struik was sent off while the Reds winger departed on a stretcher.

Eliott will face a lengthly absence but is taking a professional approach to his comeback.

‘Operation was a success! Thank you so much to everyone for your amazing support,’ the 18-year-old wrote on Instagram, attached to a shot of the winger in the hospital bed.

‘The road to recovery starts now. At the end of the storm there’s a golden sky,’ he added, referencing a lyric from Liverpool’s ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ anthem.

Elliott was building momentum and settling into regular Premier League football this season after Jurgen Klopp claimed he’d made ‘big steps’ in pre-season.

The Elland Road match was his third start in a row, emerging as one of the Reds’ brightest young stars alongside midfielder Curtis Jones.

His injury will delay his progress but Klopp will hope he makes a speedy recovery, with the Reds refusing to put a time scale on his return – though expecting him back this season.

‘Harvey sustained a fracture dislocation of his left ankle during the game,’ Dr Jim Moxon explained, having been one of the physios who rushed to the wailing Elliot as he lay stricken on the pitch.

‘We were able to reduce the dislocation immediately on the pitch and Harvey had surgery today to repair the fracture and ligaments damaged in the incident.

‘The operation was a success so his comeback starts now.

‘We won’t put pressure on him by setting a specific timeframe beyond being able to say with confidence we expect him to feature again later in the season following our rehab programme.’

The Reds will have to begin their Champions League campaign without the teenager on Wednesday, with AC Milan coming to visit Anfield.
