‘Has it landed yet?’: Riyad Mahrez makes fun of himself in hilarious Twitter exchange as the Man City winger see’s the funny side in his dreadful miss against Aston Villa
- Riyad Mahrez has seen the funny side in his shocking miss against Aston Villa
- The Man City winger blazed over from close-range in City’s win over Villa
- A comedic Mahrez quipped on social media: ‘Has it landed yet?’ afterwards
A light-hearted Riyad Mahrez has chosen to mock himself after his harrowing miss in Manchester City’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.
The Algerian should have bagged City’s fourth goal of the game after being played through one-on-one with Villa shot-stopper Emi Martinez in the game’s closing minutes.
The Etihad prepared to erupt with Mahrez having already scored from the penalty spot in the first-half and perfectly poised to double his tally as he burst through on goal.
Martinez was helpless but so was Mahrez’s aiming as his overly powerful strike sailed over the keeper, over the bar, and over numerous rows of fans before nestling somewhere amongst those seated in the stadium’s upper tiers.
Mahrez held his head in his hands after the glaring miss but today saw the funny side of the situation as he made fun of himself on Twitter.

The 31-year-old reacted to a user sharing a video of his miss, writing: ‘Has it landed yet?’ alongside a graphic of a satellite in comedic reference to the ball possibly landing in space.
A quick-witter Mahrez then replied to himself, stating: ‘Looks like it actually did’ in response to another video showing a meteor entering earth’s atmosphere.
It’s good to see the Man City was able to see the light-hearted nature of social media for once and will have undoubtedly been reprieved in the eyes of his teammates after a great all-round showing against Villa.
City responded to the Premier League’s charges brought against the club with a typically dominant performance from Pep Guardiola’s side in their appearance since accusations were made against them last week.
Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan got on the scoresheet alongside Mahrez while England striker Ollie Watkins scored a consolation goal for the visiting Claret and Blue.
City will attempt to leapfrog Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings in their next match when they travel to the Emirates on Wednesday.
