Primary school in lockdown as ‘gunman’ is shot after ‘trying to get into a classroom’

A man has been rushed to hospital after he was shot at a New Zealand primary school today.
Flaxmere Primary School in Hastings was put into lockdown as terrified teachers and students hid in cupboards at around 2pm on Tuesday.
Witnesses said they saw a large man arguing with a teacher and trying to get into the school.

Police arrived and told people to take cover, fearing the man was armed.
One mother told Stuff she heard a gunshot. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and the lockdown was lifted.
It is not clear who fired the shot.
Police said in a statement: ‘The school was put into lockdown around 2.14pm today.
‘The students are safe and well. One person has been taken to hospital with injuries.
‘Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident.
‘Cordons are still in place and members of the public are advised to avoid the area.
‘Police would like to thank the school, parents of the children and the community for their patience.’
