Andy Murray showed the will and determination that has defined his entire career despite losing to Roberto Bautista Agut on Monday morning.

He went two sets behind as he was clearly struggling with his hip injury but after two brilliant tie breaks, he managed to take the match to a final set.

Murray did eventually fall to Agut at the last, going down 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-2.

Even so, the entire arena at the Australian Open gave him a roar of approval whenever he won a point in what could yet be the final match of the two-time Wimbledon winner’s career.

And the reaction on Twitter was similar, with fans around the world going wild for his display in Melbourne. 

Andrew Jolley wrote: ‘Andy Murray could sort out Brexit’.

Tom Holt also saw a future in politics for Murray as he wrote on his Twitter: ‘Andy Murray for PM!’

Lauracp1985 said: ‘Watching Andy Murray this morning has broken me. What an amazing young man you raised Judy Murray. He is a National bloody treasure. The way other players speak of him is testament to that. Thanks for the memories.’

‘Well, if that was Andy Murray’s last ever match, what a hell of a way to bow out,’ wrote @thegloamer.

‘Honestly, have nothing but praise and respect for the guy. Wrap him up in cotton wool and send him out for 1 more dance at Wimbledon.’
