An MP has taken a tumble while showing off his soccer skills to a group of schoolgirls.

NSW Sport Minister John Sidoti was at Parliament House in Sydney to announce the state government’s support of Australia’s bid to host the Women’s Football World Cup in 2023.

He was joined by Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres for the announcement, wearing Australian football jerseys with each of the politicians’ surnames printed on the back.

Mr Sidoti then took an opportunity to show off his footwork in front of schoolgirls and Matildas players – with disastrous results.

While trying to make his way past one of the players, Mr Sidoti caught the tip of his leather shoe on the ground.

He fell over and rolled around, to the delight of those watching on.

The MP attempted to blame his footwear for the mishap.

‘Pointed shoes!’ Mr Sidoti said while laying on his back on the grass.

Meanwhile, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she was ‘excited’ about the prospect of the World Cup coming to Australia.

Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop expected other states across the nation to also get on board in support of the bid.

‘2023 can be something fantastic for the country, but its great to have NSW behind the bid and behind hosting the tournament,’ Mr Gallop said.

Mrs Berejiklian also made the call that Sydney’s problem-plagued stadium construction will be finished by the time of the event.

‘Absolutely. That’s the aim,’ she said.
