Heathcliff actor threatened police with machete

Solomon Glave (pictured at a film premiere in 2011), has been jailed for 12 months

A former child actor who played Heathcliff in the film version of Wuthering Heights has been jailed after threatening police with a 2ft machete.

Solomon Glave snapped when officers tried to arrest him during a family disturbance in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

The 20-year-old shot to fame when he was cast at the age of 13 to play Heathcliff in the most recent film version of Emily Bronte’s novel.

Glave played the part of a black orphan who is adopted and brought to Wuthering Heights.

When he was picked for the role of the romantic antihero in 2010, he said: ‘I didn’t even know what we were auditioning for.

‘I didn’t think I was going to get it. Then, every morning when I woke up, I was like: am I having a dream?’

He has now been jailed for 12 months after being tasered by police during a domestic row.

Prosecutor Hannah Walker said officers were called to Firth Park, Sheffield, at around 10.45pm on September 7.

On Friday Sheffied Crown Court heard how the actor’s father phone police, claiming Glave was ‘threatening to harm him’.

Ms Walker said: ‘Police went to arrest and detain him. He appeared to be in the front garden.

‘He was holding a large item behind his back. It was a machete, and was two feet in length.

‘He was described as acting erratically. Having said that, he did drop the weapon to the floor when asked.’

Ms Walker told the court police then used a taser on Glave because he was behaving aggressively, as more officers were sent to the scene.

Glave, who lives in Firth Park, admitted obstructing police and possession of a weapon while on bail for shoplifting two bottles of wine and four cans of lager.

He admitted breaching his bail conditions and a nine-month suspended jail sentence for punching a neighbour in the mouth.

His defence Carl Fritchley told the court: ‘In respect of the offence concerning a blade, he says there was an argument with his father. Things were very emotional.

‘The machete was among many other tools strewn in the garden at his father’s address. He said he picked up the machete with no intention of using it.

‘The police came, he was told to drop the machete, he walked towards the police and was tasered.’

Recorder Patrick Palmer said: ‘There has to be a custodial sentence for these matters.

‘I bear in mind your guilty plea and I bear in mind this will be your first custodial sentence.’
