A dog has miraculously survived after treading water for 11 hours when her owner’s boat capsized.

Heidi, a German Shepherd, was spotted by a fisherman at Moreton Bay in Queensland about 6am on Thursday.

She was surrounded by several of her owner’s items including a fuel tank, tackle box and wetsuit.

The fisherman pulled Heidi out of the water and notified Brisbane Water Police who launched an urgent search about 7.25am.

A Rescue 500 helicopter, four police vessels, Marine Safety Queensland jet ski, Volunteer Marine Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue were all used in the search for the missing man.

The search team found several items which indicated that the boat and its owner was in trouble.

They eventually found the 63-year-old clinging to a sunken 4.1 metre vessel about 10.25am.

He was taken to hospital to be checked and was not seriously injured. Heidi was also taken to the vet and was uninjured.

The boat owner told police that his vessel had lost power and was collecting water which caused it to sink.

Senior Sergeant Bairstow said it was important for boat owners to be prepared for the worst no matter where they are going.

‘We would take this opportunity to remind boaties to plan for the worst when they’re out on the water,’ he said.

‘Always wear personal flotation device and ensure that your safety equipment, including EPIRBs, are tested and in good order.

‘Thankfully there was a happy ending to this search and Heidi was able to be our honorary PD for the day.’
