Prince Harry’s royal biographer was unexpectedly joined by her pet Alsatian during a live TV interview.

Royal commentator Penny Junor appeared on Sky News from her home for an interview with Mark Austin.

The 70-year-old was asked her thoughts on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to step down as senior royals following an Instagram post on the couple’s page last night.

However the biographer was barely able to explain herself before she was joined by an unexpected furry guest.

She says: ‘Well, I mean it is the most extraordinary story, and no, no, sorry leave the dog.’

Footage shows the Alsatian come in front of the camera lens before Ms Junor pushes the dog out of the shot and starts laughing at the mishap.

‘Quite an extraordinary start as well,’ Mr Austin replies.

Ms Junor says: ‘You’re in my home and so is my dog!’

It comes after the biographer said today that the move by the royal couple had not been properly thought through, describing the decision to not consult the Queen as ‘beyond bizarre’.

She said the bombshell revelation had reminded her of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, and her sudden announcement that she was separating from Prince Charles.

‘It has echoes of Diana when she suddenly announced after her separation that she was stepping back from 50 of her charities without consulting anybody,’ she said.

‘All those charities were absolutely devastated. It’s the same kind of impetuous behaviour.

‘The problem is they’re not working for themselves, they are working for a family firm and to be making announcements of this sort without consulting is beyond bizarre.’

She added: ‘I can’t quite see how it’s going to work. I don’t think it’s been properly thought through.’

Ms Junor said there was some logic in spending time in Canada but the prospect of the couple being financially independent was difficult to envisage, if they were still working to support the Queen.

She said their future roles will be made more difficult by the financial implications of the taxpayer continuing to fund Harry and Meghan’s protection officers and official royal travel.

‘The taxpayer is not going to be happy,’ she said. ‘The taxpayer grumbles enough about paying anything for the royal family. This will just be a running sore.’

She continued:’I think it’s extraordinary but also I think it’s rather sad. They may not feel they are particularly loved but actually they are very much loved.

‘It’s sad for them but it’s also sad for us because they did very good work.’

Ms Junor penned the book Prince Harry: Brother.Soldier.Son.Husband in September 2014.
