This is the moment a bird lover’s cunning plan to stop greedy squirrels from stealing their food was caught in action. 

Hilarious footage shows a squirrel scampering up to a bird feeder in a garden in Buckinghamshire. 

However, the owner of the bird feeder had got there first and oiled the pole.

The squirrel desperately tries to scrabble up, his legs moving faster and faster but he cannot get any further up. 

After exhausting himself, he relaxes his legs and slowly slides to the bottom of the pole, still clinging on.

While holding on to the pole his keeps his eyes longingly fixed on the top of the bird feeder at the seed it is holding. 

The bird feed owner said: ‘The bird food was draining fast in our garden with at least four squirrels raiding the feeders. 

‘I decided to use extra virgin olive oil to impair their ascent up the pole. 

‘They seem to quite like the taste of it, licking up any dribbles that landed in the grass.’

After exhausting himself, he relaxes his legs and slowly slides to the bottom of the pole while longingly looking up at the food above him
