  • During the debate Warren claimed Sanders told her in private that a woman couldn’t win the presidency against Trump, Sanders denied during the debate
  • The spat prompted Warren to confront him immediately after the event – with their microphones still on
  • Clinton responded that she believed Warren, adding about Sanders: ‘I know the kind of things that he says about women and to women’
  • Ali Vitali’s book ‘Electable: Why America Hasn’t Put a Woman In the White House … Yet’ is due out on August 23

Hillary Clinton has insinuated in a new book by an NBC News reporter that she believes her former 2016 Democratic primary rival Bernie Sanders is a sexist, remarking ‘I know the kind of things that he says about women and to women.’

Clinton made the remarks to NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent Ali Vitali in her new book ‘Electable: Why America Hasn’t Put a Woman In the White House … Yet.’

In an excerpt published by Politico on Friday, the journalist recalls Clinton’s comments that followed a widely televised heated clash between Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who were both on the ballot for the 2020 presidential election.

Warren accused Sanders during the debate of telling her in private that a woman couldn’t win the presidency. He denied making the comment, which pushed Warren to confront him onstage after the debate while their microphones were still on.

Clinton, who watched it all unfold, told Vitali: ‘I believed her, because I know Sanders, and I know the kind of things that he says about women and to women. So, I thought that she was telling an accurate version of the conversation they’d had.’

Vitali’s book, a political memoir that focuses on her time covering female candidates in the recent U.S. presidential elections, is due out later this month.

Clinton spoke to Vitali after watching the drama unfold that night in 2020, but added that she wished Warren had ‘pushed back in front of everybody.’

‘I think it’s important that you call it out when it happens, and that was my only regret for her: that I wish she had just turned on him and said, ‘You know, it’s one thing to mislead people about your healthcare plan,’ she said.

‘It’s another thing to tell someone to her face that a conversation which you know happened didn’t happen.’ I mean, that would have been, I think, a really important moment for her.’

Warren’s confrontation with Sanders came after he reportedly told her in a 2018 private meeting that a woman could not win the presidency against Trump. Sanders denied ever saying this, which prompted Warren to confront him following the event.

‘I think you called me a liar on national TV,’ Warren told Sanders, who then tried to cut the conversation short.

‘Let’s not do it right now,’ Sanders responded. ‘You want to have that discussion, we’ll have that discussion.’

Warren appeared to have a conversation once more before being cut off.

‘You called me a liar, you told me — all right let’s not do it now,’ Sanders said.
