History of Newton’s Law of Motion

Newton’s laws of motion are the laws that find application even today. Sir Isaac Newton, born in 1643 is still one of the influential scientists. His ideas are the basis for modern Physics as he was successful in putting the theories of Aristotle and Galileo into practice.

There are three laws of motions: Newton’s first law, Newton’s second law, and Newton’s third law.

According to the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, every object that is present in this world has its designated place. The heavy objects such as rocks are at rest on the earth, light objects such as smoke are at rest in the sky, and the stars remain in the heavens. Aristotle always believed that all the objects are in their natural state when they are at rest and some external agent is required to move these objects in a straight line, with constant speed. However, Galileo Galilei realized that force is required to change the velocity and not to maintain the velocity. He stated that in the absence of force, the moving body will continue to remain moving.

Newton used the idea of Galileo and made that as his first law of motion, which is also known as the law of inertia.

Newton’s first law states that:

An object continues to be under the state of uniform motion unless an external force acts on it.

This law helps in understanding the behavior of an object when it is at rest and when it is in linear motion.

Newton’s second law states that:

Force is the product of mass and acceleration.

There are different ways to understand the application of the second law. It can be in the form of push or pull, attraction and repulsion of magnets or electric charges.

Newton’s third law states that:

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Concepts such as, there is symmetry in nature, forces always occur in pairs, for anybody to experience a force, the body needs to exert force and many others are explained using Newton’s third law.
