Hockey fights typically carry the risk of injury or danger to those involved, but it’s rare that more serious accidents occur. Unfortunately, one fight led to a player needing medical attention.

In a Western Hockey League game – played at the major junior level (16-20 year olds) – between the Tri-City Americans and the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday, a pair of skaters faced off in a brawl.

Seattle’s Ashton Cumby and Tri-City’s Terrell Goldsmith squared off at center ice at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Washington and the players began exchanging massive blows early in the second period.

Cumby began hammering away at Goldsmith – to the point where the Tri-City star had his helmet fly off.

Cumby then delivered a vicious right hand that crumpled his opponent to the ice and left officials stepping in to break it up.

One official does a double-take and rushes over to help Goldsmith as two Tri-City players help someone on the medical staff get out onto the ice within seconds of his collapse.

#whl Seattle vs Tri City. Cumby and Goldsmith agreed to a fight. Cumby knocked Goldsmith out and he landed face first into the ice. Instant pool of blood and he was stretchered off the ice.

According to reports, a pool of blood began to form on the ice sheet and some fans say he appeared to show signs of a seizure.

Eventually, an ambulance was called and transported Goldsmith to the hospital.

Both teams were sent to their respective locker rooms after the incident before the WHL eventually suspended the game due to the emergency – with plans to continue play at a later date.

Tri-City released a statement the following afternoon, saying, ‘Terrell Goldsmith remains in hospital this morning under observation. Upon arriving at the hospital last night, he was awake, responsive and in good spirits. The Tri-City Americans appreciate the words of concern and support for Goldsmith. We will continue to update his status.’

Goldsmith, a 19-year-old from British Columbia, was a fourth-round draft pick of the Utah Hockey Club in 2023 (back when they were known as the Arizona Coyotes).
