Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has launched an extraordinary attack on former Australian Border Force chief Roman Quaedvlieg using parliamentary privilege to accuse him of ‘grooming a girl’.

The senior cabinet minister, who last month narrowly lost a Liberal leadership bid to become Prime Minister, savaged the senior public servant a day after he had told a Senate inquiry he had granted visas to European nannies.

Mr Dutton stood up in the House of Representatives during Question Time on Tuesday to destroy the character of the former Australian Border Force commissioner with a salacious allegation.

‘This smear is coming from the former Australian Border Force commissioner, a man who was, as commissioner, sacked from his position,’ he told the chamber.

‘He was a man who had groomed a girl 30 years younger than himself.

‘He is discredited and disgraced.’

Mr Quaedvlieg was sacked from his $617,000-a-year post in March after he used his powerful position to help his girlfriend Sarah Rogers get a job as a passport scanner at Sydney Airport.

He returned to the political spotlight this week when he told a Senate inquiry that Mr Dutton had helped three European au pairs with visa problems in 2015.

His evidence gave the Greens and the Labor Opposition the impetus to support a no-confidence motion against Mr Dutton on the floor of parliament on Monday.

Facing another question from Labor on Tuesday, Mr Dutton used the occasion to attack Mr Quaedvlieg and point out that Opposition Leader Bill Shorten now employed, as an adviser, the former Australian Border Force’s executive officer.

‘So all of this muck that has been thrown, I note that Mr Quaedvlieg doesn’t turn up in person to the Senate inquiry because he doesn’t want to be cross examined,’ he said.

‘So what he does is put out this fictitious bits of information and salacious details that he can’t back up.’
