Many comments praised the act, as one person said: ‘That, right there, is Straya in a picture. #soproudrightnow #bringsateartomyeye’.

‘Heartwarming stuff, just hope they see it before lifting the bin and knocking it over,’ another user said.

Some of the comments sparked discussion about the popularity of sharing gifts with workers such as garbage collectors.

‘Man, when I was a kid EVERY house put a carton of beer next to their bin on Christmas,’ one person commented.

‘Ahhh my mum used to have us walk out and hand them a 6 pack of beer when we were kids! A tradition to obviously hand down to my future kids,’ another said.

But some rebutted the idea, saying alcohol may not be the right gift for garbage collectors at Chrismas.

One person commented: ‘I remember in our neighborhood, we were all asked to NOT put out any booze for the garbos at Xmas back in the 90s.’

‘They said it was because they were battling alcholism and Xmas time was super hard for them. They just get SO MUCH. So people left out cookies and stuff instead or even a fiver.’

Another said that their garbage collectors didn’t acknowledge beer when they tried leaving gifts for them: ‘Left a 6pack a few months ago because I wanted an extra bin emptied, garbos left the bin and 6pack.’

One user claims to be a manager at a major Sydney metro council and said Waste staff aren’t allowed to keep gifts they’ve been given.

‘At my work its a breach of policy to accept any form of gift or benefit (source: manager in major Sydney metro council) and the Waste staff have to declare each one and return it. That’s the policy,’ they said.

Another user who works for council backed up the statement: ‘As a government worker, yes, I have to return any booze given to me, unfortunately.’
