Homeowners Christmas decorations on lawn anger neighbors

Homeowners in New York City have angered their fellow neighbors with their epic festive lights display, igniting a Christmas war in the Brooklyn area.

Several residents have decorated their front lawns with thousands of twinkling lights, massive inflatable Santas, candy canes and reindeers to celebrate the festive season, however some people aren’t too happy with the display in the Dyker Heights neighborhood.

‘This is a residential neighborhood – not Times Square!’ President of Dyker Heights Civic Association, Vella-Marrone, said.

According to Marrone crowds from as far away as Japan are expected to top last year’s 100,000 visitors.

Tour buses arrive nightly from Maryland and elsewhere during peak season from December 15 all the way to January 1.

These over-the-top Christmas displays have turned normally quiet neighborhoods in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut into tourist destinations, angering some members of the community.

Eye-popping photographs posted on social media have lured multitudes, twisting the once-charming local holiday event into an out-of-control block party, said Josephine Beckmann, district manager of the local community board.

‘The street becomes completely filled with pedestrians,’ Beckmann said. ‘Last year, an ambulance had trouble accessing the street.’

Neighbors blamed hot chocolate and popcorn vendors for blocking driveways, creating mountains of trash and polluting the air with their idling food trucks.

This year Dyker Heights organizers sought a permit to ban vendors and secure sanitation and extra police services, but city officials rejected their application.

On a quiet dead-end street in Old Bridge, New Jersey, meanwhile, neighbors took matters into their own hands.

When crowds returned to gape at Tom Apruzzi’s annual display of 300,000 lights decking his home, some neighbors told CBS2 they were outraged by the legions of onlookers and Apruzzi said he bore the brunt of their anger.

‘There’s been a broken windshield on one of my trucks, there’s been spitting on sides of the truck, harassment issues. Starting to get pretty bad,’ Apruzzi told CBS2.

In Fairfield, Connecticut, police stepped in to cool tempers and negotiate a compromise after 40 neighbors signed a petition protesting parking problems created by hordes viewing Gene Halliwell’s holiday electrical extravagance on Roseville Terrace.

The display known as ‘Wonderland on Roseville,’ now in its 18th year, drew 30,000 visitors last year, said Fairfield Police Lieutenant Robert Kalamaras.

As part of the deal, neighbors agreed to a temporary parking ban on one side of the street. The homeowner, who could not be reached for comment, agreed to turn off the lights an hour earlier – by 9 p.m. local time on weekdays – and to turn down the volume on a loop of the theme song from ‘Frozen,’ Kalamaras said.

Some neighbors – and even potential neighbors – remain delighted by the flashy exhibit.

Olia Yelner, an attorney who is considering moving to the neighborhood from nearby Trumbull, Connecticut, parked at a home for sale that overlooks the Halliwell’s display and gazed at the spectacle with her three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.

‘We thought that if we bought it we could look out onto the lights each evening,’ she said, breaking into a smile.
