Homes Under The Hammer’s Martin Roberts drives 26 hours on ‘mercy dash’ to take supplies to Ukraine

Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts has updated fans on the progress of his two-day ‘mercy dash’ to drive supplies to the Ukraine.

The television star looked exhausted as he admitted to having just a few hours’ sleep as he prepared for the second leg of his journey, a 13 to 16 hour drive across Germany and Poland.

Roberts, 58, revealed last week that he was going to drive a car packed full of supplies across Europe to help those affected by Putin’s attacks on the Ukraine.

In a short clip today, the tired star asked fans for song choices to get him through the long drive and said he was fuelled on ‘wine gums and lots of Red Bull’ but that he felt a a ‘massive responsibility’ to safely deliver the supplies to the Ukraine/Poland border.

Many expressed concern that the TV presenter had taken on too much in trying to drive for 26 hours with only a short break.

After already making a 13-hour trek from the UK, which saw him crossing the Channel by Ferry, Roberts posted after a short break in the Netherlands on Sunday morning, saying: ‘I’ve managed a few hours sleep and yeah, it’s a really tough day today, it’s another 13 hours on the road.’

He had initially planned to keep driving – prompting the safety concerns from fans on social media – but eventually decided to stop, saying: ‘Took the ferry from Dover to Calais and onwards through France, Belgium and The Netherlands…heading for Germany.

‘But I’m so tired I think I’ll have to overnight in a hotel and continue onwards to Poland early am.’

Last week, the TV host broke down in tears outside Costco after trying to buy Calpol for Ukrainian children.

Roberts went to the big-box retail store to purchase supplies for kids in the war-torn country.

However, the property expert was allegedly only allowed to buy two bottles of Calpol and took to Instagram to share a video expressing his frustration.

Alongside the two minute clip, Martin wrote: ‘I wonder if @costco_uk had some collection bins that people could just put donations in it would avoid this situation. Help me try to make it happen.’

In the video filmed in a Costco car park, Martin became emotional after explaining how other shoppers came to his aid.

He said: ‘So listen, like you, I’m properly just really at a loss in terms of what I can do to help with what’s going on in Ukraine.

‘So I’ve come to Costco and I’ve just been buying lots of things like Pampers, kids stuff, Tampax and other bits and pieces.

‘You know, things for kids because it’s the kids, you know, [they’re] everything,’ as he showed his followers a view of his shopping trolley and the things he had bought.

Holding up the Calpol bottles, Martin continued: ‘So I’ve been trying to buy some Calpol and I’m only allowed to buy two, right?

‘And I know there’s some sort of sicko limit or some limit that they’ve put on that stops under normal circumstances people buying lots of Calpol.’

He then explained: ‘So some people in the queue behind me and some people in the queue at the side of me both bought four bottles for me so I managed to get more.

‘And I offered them the money, it was about ten quid for four, and they wouldn’t take it.

‘So there are such good people out there and everybody’s trying to do their bit and if you just give them a route to do it.

‘Because we’ve got to do what we can, right?’ he added as he started to cry.

He said: ‘So whatever small step you can take to do your bit, just do it. Because even a couple of bottles of these might help.

‘So do that for me alright. Not for me obviously. Do it for them. Because this is actually, if you think about it, going hopefully into the mouth of a child that needs it.

‘A homeless child who’s now wondering what the hell’s going on in some refugee camp somewhere.’

‘Anyway, you get the idea. Sorry,’ apologised Martin before signing off.
