A horrified father claims to have found a large cockroach inside a bag of sliced bread he bought at Coles.

Roger Cervetto said he had purchased the loaf at the local supermarket in Essendon, Melbourne, on Monday.

But when he arrived home and started making his children lunch, he found much more than he had paid for.

The outraged customer took to Facebook to upload a photo of the bread, showing a cockroach caught in the packaging.

‘Found a surprise in my new coles high-fibre sandwich loaf when just about to make sandwiches for kids lunch. A live cockroach,’ he said in the post.

In the photo, the insect is seen resting on the slices of bread.

A disgusted Mr Cervetto called out the supermarket and demanded it raise its quality control standards.

‘Will be heading back to Coles Essendon. Quality control and health standards need a review,’ he said.

A Coles spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the supermarket’s customer care team had responded to the customer via private message on Facebook.

‘Coles takes the quality of all our products seriously and has spoken to the customer to follow up their complaint.

‘As always we encourage customers to return any item they’re not 100% happy with to their nearest store for a full refund or replacement.’
