Horrified homeowners find giant DUMPSITE left by a tenant complete in northwest Sydney

Horrified homeowners find former tenant was using property as a DUMPSITE to sell off 20-tonnes of old fencing as firewood on Gumtree – and it’ll cost $40k to clean up

  • Couple are shocked to find a giant rubbish dump at their semi-rural property
  • Darren and Gillian Woodley claim their former tenant was running illegal tip
  • There is about 20 tonnes of lumber, metal, concrete strewn across their land

Horrified homeowners have discovered a giant rubbish dump at their semi-rural property that’s expected to cost more than $40,000 to clean up.

Darren and Gillian Woodley live in Tasmania but rent out their northwest Sydney property in Schofields, which is now strewn with piles of lumber, concrete, metal and about 20 tons of old fencing.

The couple accuse the previous tenant of running an illegal dumping operation through classified website Gumtree, before he was kicked out of the house following a fire that left it uninhabitable.

‘He’s vandalised our property,’ Mrs Woodley told A Current Affair.

‘He’s lied. He’s cheated. He’s deceived people and he’s made money from it.’

‘We were just horrified, devastated to see something that we’ve worked 20 years for, our future, and then to see it like this… it was really overwhelming.’

The Woodleys claim their former tenant profited from dumping old fences at the property and then inviting people via Gumtree to collect the discarded materials for firewood.

‘He says that he takes away your fences for free,’ Mrs Woodley said.

‘And then he gets his sub-contractors, which there are lots of them, to just come here and dump it because then it’s cheaper and he charges them to dump it, takes it off their price, so he’s making money out of that.’

Mr Woodley said if his clients knew where there old fences were going they’d be ‘appalled and shocked’.

Even though the former tenant has not lived at the property for about a year, the couple claim he still posts ads on Gumtree.

While the Channel Nine program were filming at the home, two people in a ute showed up to collect ‘free firewood’, with one claiming they travelled an hour and a half away from Lithgow.

‘The guy doesn’t even live here anymore and he’s still advertising the fact that people can come to our property and fossick through the firewood here and take some away,’ Mr Woodley said.

‘We’ve had numerous people turn up. Three or four a day.

‘It’s not fair, you can’t do this to people and walk away,’ Mrs Woodley said.
