A heart-stopping video of a baby pulling a blanket over its face during the night is a dire warning for parents to never leave anything loose in their little one’s cot.

The clip, shared to the TikTok account Safe Sleep for Babies which posts educational videos about putting infants under 12 months old to bed safely, has attracted 2.2million views. 

It suggests using the ABC method, which advocates putting them down alone, on their backs, in a safe crib with nothing in it except the baby.

The video claims to be genuine footage taken from a monitor, and shows a tot lying in its cot with a loose blanket by its head.

The baby then appears to reach out and grab the cloth and pull it over its face, before struggling to get it off.

For a distressing few seconds the baby thrashes around trying in vain to remove the blanket from its face, as a caption appears on the video reading: ‘Do not have ANYTHING in your baby’s sleep space.’

It then states that thankfully, the baby’s parents got there in time so no harm was caused.

The clip, entitled ‘This baby was saved in time. But not every baby is as lucky,’ has generated nearly 45,000 likes and 1,189 comments.

According to NHS guidelines, babies should sleep in their cot in the same room as their parents for the first six months of their life.

It suggests they are put down with their feet at the bottom of the cot to stop them wriggling down, and advises any blankets are tucked in at both sides and come no higher up than their shoulders.

A baby’s head should be kept uncovered at all times to prevent asphyxiation.
