Horrifying video shows chaos at wreckage of Cuba crash that killed 110, with only three survivors

Confronting video shows the chaotic scene around the crash site of flight DMJ 0972, which crashed on Friday afternoon not long after it took off from Havana.

As smoke pours from parts of the shattered aircraft people are seen yelling and running as they try to find survivors and pull bodies from the wreckage.

Flames are seen coming from what appear to be parts of the engine, and debris covers the ground.

Dozens of people are seen at the scene, some helping and others appearing to be frozen in shock as the horror unfolds.

The Cubana de Aviacion flight from Havana to Holguin was carrying 104 passengers and nine crew when it crashed into a yuca field near a high school in Santiago de las Vegas neighborhood shortly after takeoff.

Wreckage was strewn over the area, 12 miles south of Havana, and blackened parts of the fuselage were visible.

The remaining three passengers, all women, are fighting for their lives at Havana's Calixto Garcia Hospital

Among those who died were five children, including a baby under two years old, Cuban news outlet Granma reported.

Only four people were pulled from the wreckage alive after the crash. One man died in hospital and the other three, who are all women, are believed to still be in serious condition.

Pictures of bodies being rushed into ambulances show blood stained bandages around legs and in one confronting image, a woman who appears to be naked holds her chest as medical professionals surround her, working to keep her alive.

The survivors were taken to Havana’s Calixto Garcia Hospital.

‘She is alive but very burnt and swollen,’ a distressed relative of one of the survivors told Reuters.

The crew of the plane, captain and flight commander Jorge Luis Núñez Santos, first officer Miguel Ángel Arreola, cabin manager and senior cargo supervisor María Daniela Ríos, and flight attendants Abigail Hernández García and Beatriz Limón, were all from Mexico, El Financiero reported.

Most passengers are believed to be from Cuba, with only five tourists on board at the time.

Family members of some victims have begun to arrive on the island, where they are starting the lengthy identification process.

A flight will take off from Holguin at 10pm to transport family members of the victims to Havana so they can identify their loved ones.

The flight was leased by airline Cubana de Aviacion from a small Mexican airline called Damojh or Global, Cuban state media said. Holguin has some of the island’s most pristine beaches, and attracts tourists.

The cause of the crash is still not clear.

Witnesses at the airport terminal reported seeing a huge fireball followed by a giant plume of smoke rising in the distance.

Cuba’s newly sworn in president Miguel Diaz-Canel arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.

‘The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims,’ he told AFP.

Cuba’s national airline, Cubana de Aviacion, has been plagued with safety issues in recent years due to its aging fleet – and only yesterday, more than a third of its fleet were officially grounded.

The company – which has a fleet of 16 with an average age of almost ten years old – received an order from the Cuban National Aviation Authority to ground its six An-158 aircraft due to ‘serious’ technical and safety issues including cracks and mechanical issues, according to Airline Geeks.
