Young surfer is mauled by a shark at a popular swimming spot – with beach shut as the predator remains nearby

A young surfer has been attacked by a shark while catching waves at a popular beach.

The man, aged in his 20s, was bitten by the shark during a surfing session at Crescent Head Beach on NSW’s mid-north coast around 4.30pm on Monday. 

He was assisted from the water by other beachgoers and remains at the scene being treated by paramedics for a serious arm injury.

The man is expected to be airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. 

Mid North Coast Police will liaise with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. 

The beach has been closed by Surf Life Saving NSW.

Crescent Head is a popular point break for water sports and is frequented by surfing enthusiasts for its waves.
