An allegedly armed man pulled a gun at police before he was shot dead outside a regional hospital.

The confrontation unfolded in the carpark of the Manning Base Hospital in Taree on the NSW mid-north coast at about 12.55pm on Thursday.

‘The man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police,’ a police statement read.

‘Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

‘The man – believed to be aged in his 30s – was taken into the hospital where he died a short time later.’

No police officers or other members of the public were physically injured.

Thirty minutes before the shooting, police were called to Rouse St in Wingham, following reports a man had fired shots into the air.

Those calls came five minutes after the police had been called to Summerville St in Wingham on a concern for welfare check.

Wingham is located 8.5km west of Taree.

Officers from the Manning-Great Lakes police district attended the scene at Rouse St.

They searched for the man before the confrontation at Manning Base Hospital.

As will all incidents where someone is killed by a police officer, a critical incident investigation team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate what happened.

That investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
