Horror as school bus careers into a ditch and overturns forcing children to clamber to safety through hatch in the roof

A bus carrying a group of school children has been involved in a crash as it took pupils home.
Students from Plumpton College in East Sussex were on board the bus when it tumbled into a ditch just after 4.30pm today.
The children managed to escape from a hatch in the roof of the bus, which was pictured on its side with a smashed window this evening.

There were believed to have been 16 people on board and all the children have since been accounted for and there are no major injuries.
A spokesman for the school said their pupils were being collected by parents.
In a statement on their website, the school asked parents to get in touch if their child was on the bus taking them back to Eastbourne.

Sussex police closed the B2116 in both directions as the bus was recovered.
A spokesman for East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: ‘At 16:37, firefighters from Brighton, Lewes and Burgess Hill were called to attend an RTC involving a coach on B2116 Ditchling Road, Plumpton.
‘Crews are still on scene. No persons were trapped. Please be aware that the road is closed.’
