Emergency services were called to the Surf Parade Resort in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast shortly before 2pm on Wednesday following the activation of a fire alarm.

They arrived to find thick, black smoke billowing from a third storey unit.

Dozens of occupants were evacuated from the accommodation at the time.

Firefighters spent half an hour battling the blaze before finding the body of a 26-year-old woman inside the gutted unit.

Police set a crime scene but aren’t considering the woman’s death as suspicious at this stage.

‘There’s nothing suspicious we’re looking at,’ Detective Sergeant Dane Sheraton told reporters.

‘She was the only one in the unit.’
