Matej Mohoric has been forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia after a sickening crash on a descent on stage nine left him in hospital.

Slovenian Mohoric was part of an early breakaway and heading down the Passo Godi when he appeared to lose grip on a left-hand turn and flipped head over heels.

Despite initially looking ready to mount the spare bike after hauling himself back to his feet, Mohoric was carried on a stretcher into an ambulance and taken for medical checks.

His Bahrain Victorious team was in the thick of the action as a number of riders looked to attack the race on the road to Campo Felice.

It was when Mohoric was behind team-mate Gino Mader that the horror incident took place, however.

His wheel re-gripped on the tarmac, but Mohoric, 26, was sent into the curb before careering over the handlebars and coming down directly on his head.

Footage from the television cameras revealed the shocking extent of the damage with Mohoric’s ruined bike lying in pieces on the ground.

It appeared that the Slovenian’s forks cleanly snapped when he made contact with the curb and the bike was effectively sliced in two.

Bahrain Victorious have provided an update on their rider. A statement said: ‘He has been taken to the hospital by ambulance for radiological diagnostics.

‘He is being kept under observation according to UCI concussion protocol.’

Mohoric had a neck brace fitted and was taken away after it was deemed he would not be able to continue.

Visibly rocked by the manner of his crash, Mohoric was also seen slumped down by the barriers along the right-hand side of the road.

Concussion protocols implemented for this season detail that a rider suspected to have suffered from an impact to their head should be assessed by first responders.

This may be other riders, coaches or mechanics, and will depend on who arrives quickest at the scene of a crash.

Bahrain Victorious are now down to six riders overall after Mohoric was taken for treatment and Mikel Landa abandoned the race on stage five.

Landa, their general classification leader, suffered from a crash at high speed during the run-in to Cattolica for a sprint finish.
