A racehorse part-owned by late cricket legend Shane Warne that was backed as the favourite by sentimental punters failed to finish after an accident.

‘Sacred Oath’ was the favourite to win race 2 at the Maiden Plate in Ipswich, Queensland on Wednesday afternoon but jockey Ryan Maloney came off the horse after 100m of the race after the colt hit the railing.

After a smooth start the horse appeared to be heading to the front of the field when it appeared to be checked and forced into the railing, after which Maloney hit the track and tumbled a number of times.

‘I just blacked out for a bit when I hit the deck,’ the jockey said after the race.

It’s believed the colt had received interference from eventual winner Tesaura and another horse.

‘I will leave it up to the stewards to work out, I am too emotionally charged by the whole incident,’ Sacred Oath’s trainer David Vandyke said later.

The three-year-old is owned by Warne and a bunch of prominent mates including actor Shane Jacobson, sports presenter Hamish McLachlan, and several current AFL players.

Sacred Oath was at the short odds of $1.30 shortly before the race.

After torrential rain and floods the track was rated a Heavy 10 and the trainer predicted it would revel in the conditions.

Maloney wore a black armband in Warne’s honour during the race.

Sacred Oath ran second in its only other race to three-year-old filly ‘A Call from Heaven’ at Doomben in February.

‘Warnie was one of my heroes growing up… I just loved watching Warnie, he was just so flamboyant,’ Maloney, originally from Victoria, said.

Vandyke said before the race that if Sacred Oath had won, emotions would be high.

‘I think we are all in shock over it really, so it would be a great tribute to him if the horse could win,’ Vandyke said.

‘He is going well, I think he will be hard to beat. Hopefully the draw (barrier one) works but we will see how it unfolds.

‘He ran a great race first up and 1500m should suit this time, it looks a good second-up run for him.’

There have reportedly been a surge of smaller bets on the horse in the lead-up to the race with sentimental fans likely having a punt on the runner.

‘Sentimental punters will want to be all over Sacred Oath on Wednesday when they realise it was Shane Warne’s horse, they will want to back it in memory of the great man,’ Glenn Munsie from Tabcorp said.
