HOT OR NOT: Virat Kohli showed his class with real sportsmanship against Pakistan… and referees are RIGHT to penalise goalkeepers for coming off the line on penalties

  • India captain Virat Kohli showed a real act of sportsmanship against Pakistan
  • John Terry’s quick move to shut down speculation of a departure is refreshing
  • Nobody can blame goalkeeper Tom Heaton from turning down a deal at Burnley
  • It is right to penalise goalkeepers for coming off the line during a penalty kick

It’s Hot or Not time again as Sportsmail’s Ian Ladyman reveals what’s been making him feel warm and what’s been leaving him cold this week.

HOT

VIRAT KOHLI

Much was made of the India captain’s plea to his team’s supporters to stop booing Australia’s Steve Smith but a greater act of sportsmanship followed against Pakistan.

Kohli’s instinctive decision to walk after ‘edging’ a short ball from Mohammad Amir was admirable. Unfortunately, it transpired he hadn’t actually touched the ball, which will only discourage other players from following suit.

JOHN TERRY

Only days after being linked with what may soon be a vacant manager’s role at Derby County, it was announced Terry had signed a new deal at Aston Villa.

Too many managers and coaches play silly games in the media when linked with other positions, which makes Terry’s stance refreshing. He is staying and would like people to know.

TOM HEATON

Conversely, sometimes it pays to look after yourself. Heaton knows how cruel football can be, losing his place with Burnley and England when injured two years ago.

Fit and firing again, the 33-year-old goalkeeper has turned down a new deal at Turf Moor and will not be short of suitors. If he is after a bigger profile and a few more quid before next summer’s European Championship, who can blame him?

NOT

CHIAMAKA NNADOZIE

Nnadozie is the Nigerian goalkeeper who moved off her line as Wendie Renard placed her penalty wide in Rennes.

Strangely, there was sympathy in some quarters for Nnadozie simply because she hadn’t actually saved the shot.

But that is irrelevant. She broke a very clear rule – as did Scotland’s Lee Alexander on Wednesday – and was rightly punished when Renard buried the retake.

The problem is not the rule but the fact it is so rarely implemented.

MALI WOMEN’S T20 TEAM

Bowled out for just six in their international against Rwanda, the true horror of an embarrassing day is to be found in the detail.

Only one of their team actually scored a run as opener Mariam Samake was dismissed for one.

The other 10 batters registered ducks with the remaining five runs coming from extras. Rwanda didn’t hang around when it was their turn. They took just four balls to score the winning runs.

PATRICK REED

The former US Masters champion snapped his wedge over his knee after duffing a chip at Pebble Beach.

Don’t try to copy this at home, kids. It hurts. Trust me, I know.
