A woman who fell for her now 68-year-old fiance when she was just 19 has told how her family has finally accepted their age gap relationship now they have a baby together.

Housekeeper Stefani Anderson, 23, from Vernon in British Columbia, in Canada, met retired contractor Don Walper, a divorcee, while she was working at a bar he frequented.

Almost four years on, the couple have a five-month-old son, Lachlan, and her preparing to tie the knot – despite opposition from Stefani’s family and even strangers who told her Don ‘looks like her grandpa’.

Stefani, who said her attraction to ‘handsome’ Don was instant, said she rarely forms close friendships with people her own age, and loves joining her older partner as he explores his passions for golf and wine tasting.

‘At first, my brother wasn’t very impressed and my mom and dad were not fans of the idea, but luckily everyone eventually came around,’ said Stefani, whose parents were 54 and 65 when the couple began dating.

‘We know what we have together. We’re getting married and we have a child we love. That’s why we don’t even pay attention to what people say anymore.

Recalling the early days of their relationship, Stefani said: ‘He used to come into the bar all the time and flirt with me. I had a crush on him right away. I just thought he was so handsome.

‘It works out really well because I don’t get along with people my own age. I like talking to people with a higher maturity level. My closest friend at work is 58-years-old.’

And she said she doesn’t worry about Lachlan’s future, even though his father will be approaching 70 when he celebrates his first birthday.

‘I don’t think it makes a difference that Don might not be around for much of Lachlan’s life,’ she said.

‘No matter what happens, he will always know that his dad loves him. ‘

Divorcee Don, who said he wasn’t expecting to become a father in old age, shared his adoration for his new baby son, and said one of his favorite things about his relationship with Stefani is the fact they almost never argue.

‘I was on the dating scene for quite a few years and the drama with some of those women was terrible,’ he said.

‘Stefani just makes things so simple.

‘When I learned that she wanted to have a baby with me, I was accepting of it and I’m glad I was because he’s such a gorgeous little guy.’

Stefani said that when they first began dating her brother, 28, was convinced the divorcee was using her for sex.

But now Don has become good friends with his fiancé’s mother, Janet, and Stefani has a similarly close relationship with his 67-year-old sister Anita.

The mother-of-one said she believes having their baby and getting engaged has been a major influence in changing the perceptions of their family members – not to mention being able to ignore strangers’ stares.

She said: ‘Ever since we’ve had the baby, we’ve been hearing nothing but nice things from friends and family. I haven’t heard one negative comment from them in five months.

‘I have become so close with Don’s sister that I now consider her one of my closest friends.

‘It’s amazing how my mom wasn’t in favor of the relationship at first, but now they are getting along great.’
