Houston boy dies after accidentally shooting himself in the head

A two-year-old boy is dead after he accidentally shot himself in the head at his home on Sunday afternoon.

Christopher Williams Jr lost his life after he found a 9mm pistol on the couch in the living room of his Houston home and pointed it at his head, police said.

‘Junior’, as he was lovingly called, was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.

Authorities said both his parents were at home at the time of the shooting, which occurred just before 1pm.

Police believe the pistol belonged to Junior’s father, Christopher Charles Williams, according to KHOU 11.

Williams was inconsolable following the shooting, sobbing ‘He was my son!’ as he was briefly detained in the back of a police car before being placed in an ambulance.

Both Williams and his wife will be interviewed by the Houston Police Department’s Special Victims Division to determine how Junior was able to access the gun.

Authorities have not yet determined if either parent will be charged with failing to make a weapon inaccessible to a child.

Williams was convicted in 2009 for being a felon in possession of a handgun, according to Harris County court records.

Shamanda Williams, who was on the scene after the shooting, said her brother was a good father.

Suzanne Alvarado, Junior’s cousin, reiterated Shamanda’s words.

‘He’s a hands-on father,’ she told KTRK. ‘Twenty-four hours a day, he’s with his son. He’s better than most dads you’ll run into.’

Alvarado, like many of Junior’s family members, were devastated as they stood outside of the home following the shooting.

‘He doesn’t deserve this,’ she said. ‘He’s a great little boy with a lot of life to live.’

Houston Police Department Capt David Angelo called the shooting a ‘tragic incident’ as he urged gun owners to lock up their weapons.

‘Unfortunately, it’s something that didn’t need to happen,’ he said.

‘But hopefully parents can heed this advice and let’s hope nothing like this happens again, it’s very traumatic.’

Junior is the third boy in the Houston area to die from an accidental fatal shooting in just five months, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Justin Gooden, six, shot himself with his sister’s boyfriend’s pistol in February.

And Kadren Johnson, four, shot himself with a gun he discovered in his grandmother’s home just days earlier.
