Houston Texans visit Harvey survivors in flood shelter

The Houston Texans have visited Harvey storm survivors as defensive end JJ Watt’s hurricane relief fundraiser has raised more than $10million.

Watt, along with 54 players and staff members from the NFL team, spent more than an hour posing for photos and signing autographs for stranded residents at the NRG Center on Thursday.

Outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus took a selfie with Lea Jones, who was flooded out of her home in the Dairy Ashford area, while survivors Kourtney Love and Samantha McClain danced as they met quarterback Tom Savage.

In total, more than 131,000 people have donated and Watt has increased the goal to $15million.

Watt created the YouCaring page Tuesday, which initially raised $500,000, but rapidly gained public attention over the course of several hours. 

The beloved sports star continues to be so blown away by generosity of community members and supporters alike, he since upped the goal three times.

Other celebrities like Kevin Hart, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, Sandra Bullock, Nicki Minaj, D.J. Khaled, T.I., Chris Brown, The Kardashians, Drake and Beyoncé have donated large sums of money to the cause.

Community GoFundMe pages have been wildly successful with various goals in aiding animals, victims’ medical costs, supply of food, etc. 

Watt, 28, who has been hailed a local hero for his constant support of the cause, has posted several emotional videos to his Twitter following of 3.96 million to thank everyone.

He said on Thursday: ‘$10 MILLION!!! Absolutely incredible. The most difficult times bring out the best in humanity.’

He added: ‘I can’t say thank you enough – celebrities, musicians, athletes, kids with their lemonade stands and people hosting fundraisers, businesses donating.

‘What’s happening right now is my focus is very much on getting this money directly back to the people.’

‘I am working closely with my team at BeyGOOD as well as my pastor (Rudy Rasmus at St. John’s in downtown Houston) to implement a plan to help as many as we can,’ she said.
