A Queensland father says he owes his life to his ‘hero son’ who punched out two ferocious pit bull terriers as they mauled him during a family outing.

Locksmith Brett Grant, wife Jennifene and son Dalton were at Ingham Showgrounds in far north Queensland last Saturday when a stranger’s ute pulled up close to them.

The driver unloaded a pack of six dogs, including the two pit bull terriers, which made a beeline for Mr Grant’s family.

‘They tried to attack my wife at first,’ Mr Grant told Daily Mail Australia.

‘When I asked the man with the ute if they were his dogs, they just started coming for us.’

Mr Grant tried to hide in a nearby car as the dog owner attempted to control one dog, but the second continued the frenzied attack and sunk its teeth into him.

‘It latched on to my backside, then it started going at my throat… I couldn’t do anything to get this dog off me, it wouldn’t stop,’ he said.

As Mrs Grant watched on in horror, Dalton, 24, leapt in to save his father from almost certain death as the dogs tore at his flesh.

‘He just kept on punching the dog until it finally released,’ Mr Grant said.

‘If it wasn’t for him I would be dead, I owe him my life.’

Mr Grant was rushed to Townsville University Hospital before undergoing three hours of surgery to treat injuries including multiple bites to the shins, lower and upper legs, knee-joint, buttocks and upper right arm from protecting his throat and face.

‘I was in surgery for about three hours because with dog bites they had to reopen [all the wounds] to clean and wash everything thoroughly,’ he said.

‘The doctors think there are about 13 bites – it’s a bit hard to count because there’s sort of tooth marks everywhere.’

Mrs Grant was treated for shock at Ingham Hospital due to the savagery of the attack.

‘She’s still very shaken,’ he said. ‘And Dalton’s not ready to talk about it.’

Mr Grant, who owns a security locksmith business in Ingham, said he will now focus on helping his son with some of his ‘projects’ as a way to repay him.

‘He wants some [water] tanks built and some ride-on stuff done,’ he said.

Mr Grant said he was speaking out to warn others about the dangers posed by irresponsible dog owners.

‘I am an animal lover and I don’t blame the breed. I’ve met plenty of pit bulls which are absolute puppies,’ he said.

‘I blame the way they were raised.’

Hinchinbrook Mayor Ramon Jayo confirmed that the dogs had been seized pending an investigation, and a legal process was underway.
