How footy fans and players’ WILD celebration cost their team a grand final win in shocking scenes

A local grand final ended in chaotic fashion as fans flooded the pitch in a very costly act for their team.

Players and spectators associated with Old Camberwell began celebrating after the final siren was sounded during the VAFA under 19s division two grand final against University Blues, believing they had won the flag by five points.

However, the umpire had awarded a free kick to the Blues just moments before the siren went, with the penalty set for over 60 metres from goal.

That distance would have been too far for the Blues to successfully overturn the five-point deficit, given the torrid conditions at the oval.

But the fans’ and players’ premature celebrations proved incredibly costly.

At least four players were seen streaming onto the field of play while a handful of others, not dressed in club gear, also entered the pitch.

The umpire punished Camberwell for entering the field of play before the end of the game by awarding a 50 metre penalty to the Blues, a crucial intervention that gave the Blues a real chance of winning.

It meant that the final kick of the match was within scoring distance.

Angus Watson was tasked with kicking for goal from around 15 metres out directly in front of the posts, and held his nerve to clinch the premiership for his side.

After the ball sailed through the sticks, Blues fans stormed the pitch to celebrate and taunt Camberwell in the ultimate capitulation rarely seen before in footy.
