Thousands of Australians have begun exercising outdoors as gyms shut amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Gym-junkies were spotted taking full advantage of the outdoor exercise equipment set up at Queens Park in Sydney’s east.

Sydneysiders eagerly used the various cardio and weight machines as well as their own workout gear.

One woman could be seen working out with a barbell and weights that she had brought with her.

She also exercised on the nearby grass using a set of gymnastics rings that were tied to a tree.

Another man took advantage of the outdoor sunshine and went shirtless during his workout.

He focused on his upper-body as he practiced his strength training on the park’s equipment.

Gym-goers have also taken to walking or running around popular Sydney spots in order to exercise.

Joggers were seen running alongside the closed Bondi Beach, with some even wearing face masks.

Outdoor walking tracks like the Bay Run through Drummoyne, Rozelle and Rodd Point were also teeming with people.

Australia’s gyms, pubs, clubs, cafes and cinemas were forced to close on Monday as the federal government brought in harsher restrictions to battle the spread of COVID-19.

Cafes and restaurants can now only offer a takeaway service while the other venues have been shut down for at least six months.

The restrictions also cover places of worship, casinos, restaurants and cafes without takeaway services and registered clubs.

Supermarkets, bottle shops and clothing stores are exempt from the rules.

The Australian Department of Health also stated that everyone must keep at least 1.5 metres apart to prevent the spread of the deadly virus, which has already infected more than 1,800 people.
