An Australian organisation and home hacks guru has shared her simple trick for getting free plastic bags at the supermarket when you forgot your own – but not everyone is convinced.

Anita Birges, who heads Mise en Place Professional Organising in Sydney, said she takes bags out of the soft plastic recycling bin instead of forking out 15 cents each in a video posted to her popular TikTok page. 

‘Here’s a little hack for you – I forgot shopping bags today so I came over to the recycling area and grabbed a whole bag full, there you go,’ she explained in the clip.

‘I keep bags in the boot of my car, so I just load it into my trolley unbagged and then bag as I load it into my car,’ a third suggested. 

Some however questioned if customers were allowed to take bags from the recycling and whether it was ‘unhygienic’. 

‘Eeeekkk I don’t think I could use bags that I had no idea who used them last or what was in them. Good idea though,’ one person wrote. 

‘I didn’t think we could grab bags from there,’ a second said and another commented: ‘On the next episode of this feels illegal but it’s not..’ 

‘These are the bags I used to pick up dog poop, I give them a rinse and put them in the recycling at Woolies,’ warned a fourth.
