How to survive a knife attack: Chinese police’s advice video goes viral… for unexpected ending

A knife attack survival video released by the Chinese police has gone viral for its humorous and unexpected ending.

Filmed in south-west China, the 12-second advice clip begins with a serious message from a seemingly eager uniformed police officer.

‘Today, we will teach you what to do when you encounter a knife-wielding assailant,’ he announced standing in front of three fellow policemen.

However, when the camera tilts back to the officer, he was seen running away and yelling loudly: ‘Heeeeeelp! Police!’

What the police is trying to say is that citizens are advised to run away from the scene as fast as they can and seek the help of law enforcement and not engage the attacker directly.

The hilarious video was filmed by the Longyang district branch of Boashan city police in Yunnan province and posted onto Hubei Shiyan police department’s official Weibo account.

‘Normal people should deal with knife attackers this way. This is very practical – everyone must learn this method!’ Shiyan police department said in the post.

An American version of the video was posted on YouTube on May 6 and was assumed to be where the Chinese police got the idea.

The now-viral video has gathered more than 16.7 million views online in China.

Many net users were amused by the comedy and the unexpected ending.

‘I can’t help but laugh… but it is very true. A normal person should not engage the knife attacker rashly,’ said one.

Security experts have said that one of the most essential self defence tactics include leaving the area immediately if something feels wrong.

They advised that if someone is coming towards you with a knife, use your keys as a weapon. If you are holding a drink, throw it over their face.

The important thing is to get space to run away, they added.
