How two homes fit for millionaires became one for a BILLIONAIRE

This is the stunning interior of mobile phones tycoon John Caudwell’s refurbished 15-bedroom home over nine floors after he merged two Mayfair houses into an astonishing 43,000 sq ft property worth £250million.

The 67-year-old – who sold his Phones4U empire for £1.5billion in 2006 – allowed cameras inside the home in London in the final months of its £65million refurbishment for a new Channel 4 documentary on next Wednesday.

The mansion features a subterranean basement that joins the two properties together, a mechanical eight car stacker, a swimming pool with an installation that looks like lava and a dining room featuring a river with live fish.

Mr Caudwell – whose partner is Modesta Vzesniauskaite, 36, who represented her native Lithuania in cycling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics – worked closely with builders and designers on a vision for his perfect home.

In ‘Britain’s Most Expensive Home’, Mr Caudwell, who wants to use the house for charity events, said: ‘It’s really beautiful, isn’t it – it sort of takes your breath away.’ He added: ‘My nature is to micro manage everything.’

The home will feature a ballroom catering for 200 guests and its own hidden car-lift and stacking parking system. It also comes with an entertainment floor featuring a swimming pool, gym, salon, ‘media room’ and games room.

There will be a river running through his Thai-themed dining room complete with colourful fish to entertain guests at the house, which he bought from Prince Jefri Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei’s brother, in 2012 for £81million.

The father of five began renovating the 18th and 19th century, Grade-II listed properties, linked by a courtyard, in 2015 and is due to move in by October. Mr Caudwell plans to use the ballroom to host galas in aid of good causes.

The new property also features private quarters at the front for a family of three including a dining room in the third floor conservatory, a nightclub and a cinema and an ornate 1400 sq ft ballroom for entertaining guests.

The documentary – due to air on Channel 4 at 9pm next Wednesday – joins the entrepreneur’s building project in its final stages, already £55million over budget and originally meant to open in time for Christmas 2018.

It looks at the complex project being carried out in the narrow confines of Mayfair, with unique engineering challenges including the basement that joins the two mansions together and the mechanical car stacker.

It also features Mr Caudwell driving to one of his first businesses – a used car lot – and looks at the placement of 20,000 sheets of gold leaf around the property as workers try to complete it for his birthday in October 2019.

The river is expected to use water constantly recycled to create a flowing effect. Mr Caudwell, from Stoke-on-Trent, is said to pay the most income tax in Britain – contributing more than £200million over five years.

He dropped out of school to work in a tyre factory before becoming a second-hand car dealer, then setting up his phone firm. He also owns Broughton Hall, a £12million Jacobean manor house in Eccleshall near Stoke.

Executive producer Dan Barraclough said: ‘This incredible access gives us a glimpse into the world of the truly mega wealthy, where every whim can be realised, but where things can still go wrong, as on any building site.

‘At the heart of the program is the intriguing character of Caudwell himself – a tough taskmaster, but also a committed philanthropist. He is a man with huge wealth, but one who still counts the pennies, the boy from Stoke who has set his heart on a home in the ‘old money’ world of Mayfair. It makes for a fascinating character portrayal.’

Britain’s Most Expensive Home: Building for a Billionaire is on Channel 4 next Wednesday at 9pm
