Huddersfield face unfair dismissal case over Frankie Bunn

  • The dismissal reflects manager David Wagner’s increasing influence at the club
  • Huddersfield have seen their fairytale season accompanied by off-field issues
  • The club have restructured their academy and dropped down categories

Huddersfield Town Under 23s coach Frankie Bunn is considering suing the Premier League club for unfair dismissal after losing his job.

Bunn, who had been at Huddersfield in 2012, was told the news on Wednesday, with first team-manager David Wagner becoming an increasingly influential figure at the west Yorkshire club.

The move will alarm Terriers fans whose fairytale debut season in the Premier League has been accompanied by off-field controversy.

In September, they announced a major overhaul of their academy structure, dropping their status from Category II to Category IV, after failing to produce players good enough for their first team.

Bunn played as a striker for Luton, Hull City and Oldham in a 14-year career and was best known for scoring a record six goals for Oldham against Scarborough in a 1989 League Cup tie when Joe Royle was manager.

He later worked as a coach at Coventry and assistant-manager at Rochdale before taking over the under-18s at Huddersfield.

His son Harry Bunn was also on the club’s books and scored in a cup-tie against Manchester City last season before signing for Bury in the summer.

Huddersfield currently sit 12th in the Premier League table, four points outside the bottom three, after winning promotion via the Championship play-offs.

But after an excellent start to the season and beating Manchester United and the John Smith’s Stadium, they have lost five of their last six matches.
