Hugh Sheridan shares a touching tribute to his late father Denis – nine months after his death from cancer: ‘Keep flying my angel’


Hugh Sheridan has delivered a beautiful tribute to his father, the late Australian singer Denis Sheridan, nine months after losing him to cancer.  

Posting to Instagram on Friday, the House Husbands actor uploaded a throwback clip of himself and Denis sitting outdoors at a restaurant breaking into song.  

The two men did a stirring rendition of I Did It My Way as they sat in front of a table laden with wine.

‘Nine months today. I miss everyone of my friends who died last year, but dad, you were the best fun,’ Hugh wrote. 

‘The Pope of the street. Keep flying my angel,’ he added.  

A number of Hugh’s famous friends were touched by the tribute.

Denis passed away in May of last year. The veteran Adelaide swing singer died surrounded by his family.

Hugh wrote, ‘Be free papa’, alongside a section of the poem ‘Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone’ by W H Auden, which was memorably recited in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral.

‘He was my North, my South, my East and West,’ a section of the poem reads.   

‘My working week and my Sunday rest… My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song.’

The Packed to the Rafters actor also shared a photograph of his father as a child and a second photograph of a rainbow.  

Hugh’s post was quickly inundated with well-wishes from his celebrity friends. 

Denis, who last performed in public two months before his death, had been receiving palliative care at Mary Potter Hospice in North Adelaide.
