Stunning images have been captured of a whale frolicking in Sydney Harbour at sunset.

The pictures were taken on Monday by award-winning Sydney-based photographer Matt Kemp who runs whale migration photo safaris with Manly Ocean Adventures.

They show the humpback whale at full breach with Sydney’s city skyline in the background.

One even shows the whale with its tail out of the water underneath a beautiful rainbow which appeared over Sydney on Monday afternoon.

Mr Kemp has been observing and photographing whale migration for over eight years.

‘We see a lot of whale blows, tail slaps and occasionally we get lucky with a breach,’ he told daily mail Australia.

‘Capturing the breach is definitely a highlight, but just to see these majestic sea creatures is breathtaking in itself.

‘It’s hard to explain the exhilarating feeling you get when a massive humpback whale breaches right in front of you and it’s a buzz just to see a group of smiling faces as we return to the harbour.

‘This season we have started running exclusive ‘golden hour’ (sunset and sunrise) safaris to bring the best experience a wildlife photographer could ever want.

‘The dramatic lighting of a sunrise and sunset adds to the magic.’
