This is the unnerving moment hundreds of birds overran a gas station in Texas – in a scene eerily reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds.

Christine Dobbyn, an anchor for ABC13, filmed the birds – called grackles – taking over an ExxonMobil gas station in Houston.

‘I like you #birds but this kind of freaked me out,’ she wrote alongside the video, which has been viewed more than 10,000 times since she posted it on Twitter on February 2.

The clip is reminiscent of a scene from Hitchcock’s 1963 film The Birds starring Tippi Hedren, which includes an iconic scene where birds attack townsfolk at a gas station.

Dobbyn said she had seen grackles at that gas station before, but never so many on the ground at once since they usually sit on power lines.

‘It was crazy that night. I ended up moving across the street to another gas station even though there were some there as well,’ she told Buzzfeed News.

Although she was nervous to get out of her vehicle, she added that she managed to get gas without any issues.

Dr Kevin McGowan, of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, told Buzzfeed the grackles were likely attracted to the station by the bright lights.

Grackles like to roost in large flocks, especially in the winter, but were likely disturbed by the lights, he said.
